Newly Invented Microheater at AUT

 | Post date: 2021/06/28 |
A team led by Dr. Mostafa Keshavarz, an expert faculty member of AUT, succeeded in designing and manufacturing a microheater. Nano-technology and micro-technologies are among the priorities of science and technology research of the country. Microfluidic systems, due to their small size, in addition to being portable, save materials and energy, time and labor, and reduce the likelihood of human error. Microheaters are widely used, from gas sensors to chip-based laboratory technology and space heating for the synthesis of nanostructures and biotechnologies. Currently, microfluidic research laboratories are the main customers of this high-tech product, and the gained technical knowledge will lead to significant advances in microfluidic related fields.
Somayeh Sohrabi, a Ph.D. student in chemical engineering and head of this project, added: In general, microheaters are used wherever accurate temperature control is important. With the development of micro-technology, it became possible to build MEMS electromechanical devices. The applications of these tools in medicine and chemical processes became more diverse due to advantages such as the ratio of surface area to high volume, the possibility of high fluid flow control, and temperature control. In the design of this microheater, the resistance and power consumption were optimized to distribute the temperature evenly. Another advantage of this microheater is the design of the temperature sensor in which it is installed.
Dr. Keshavarz Moroji added: NanoSniff, Murata, and Dolomite are the manufacturers of microheaters abroad. This technology has not been localized in Iran and there is no manufacturer of microheaters in the country, and companies that work in the field of microfabrication are only able to create chips and do not make microheaters with a control system. The team has the ability to manufacture microheater with a control system similar to foreign models at one-fifth of their prices.
